SCRAPING:
Scraping massage therapy, also known as Gua Sha, is a traditional Chinese healing technique that involves using a tool, often made of jade, horn, or other materials, to scrape the skin in order to improve circulation, release muscle tension, and promote healing. The therapist applies gentle pressure to the skin and then uses the scraping tool to stroke the skin in a specific manner, creating redness and often small raised marks called "sha" that usually fade after a few days.
This technique is believed to help increase blood flow to the treated area, relax tight muscles, and promote the body's natural healing processes. It's often used to address issues like muscle pain, inflammation, and tension.Â
CUPPING:
Cupping therapy using plastic and silicone cups is a technique where special cups made of these materials are used to create a vacuum effect on the skin, promoting healing and relaxation. Here's how it typically goes:
Getting Set: The therapist selects plastic or silicone cups of various sizes, often transparent so they can see the skin's response. These cups have a soft, flexible nature and are more comfortable to use compared to traditional glass or bamboo cups.
Creating Suction: Instead of heat, these cups use a different method to create suction. The therapist squeezes the cup, then places it on your skin. When they release the cup, it creates a vacuum that gently draws your skin and a small amount of underlying tissue into the cup.
Suction and Placement: The cups can be left in one spot or moved around depending on your needs. They might use a massage oil or lubricant to help the cups glide smoothly across your skin. The suction effect helps increase blood flow to the area, which can aid in relieving muscle tension and promoting healing.
Effects: As with other cupping techniques, this one can cause circular marks on your skin. These marks are not painful and are temporary, typically fading within a few days to a week. They're a result of the suction drawing up blood and other fluids, and they're considered a normal part of the therapy.
Benefits: People use plastic and silicone cupping therapy to address various issues, such as muscle stiffness, stress, and even respiratory problems. Many find it to be a relaxing experience, although it's worth noting that everyone's response can be different.
